I have recently graduated college with an engineering degree and found myself with...free time? It's a startling concept, but within this free time, I've started reading classics, philosophy and science books that I've been dying to discuss, but alas cannot find participants. That, my friend, is why this meetup exists! Hope there are others that enjoy reading a wide variety and range of topics that explore our physical, metaphysical and perhaps even pseudo-physical philosophies and theories. I'v …
… This Takoma Park/Silver Spring-based meetup was inspired by the 2001 book Socrates Cafe: A Fresh Taste of Philosophy by Christopher Phillips. Our model is described in Wikipedia: Socrates Cafés are gatherings around the world where people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences while embracing the Socratic Method. The groups model their discussions from the book of the same name Christopher Phillips; there are over 400 ongoing gatherings around t …

Enjoy reading brainy books? Classics of world literature? Philosophy? Something entertaining, yet intellectually stimulating? Do you actually CHOOSE to pick up novels by the likes of E.M. Forster, D.H. Lawrence, Emily Bronte, or maybe Toni Morrison? Does exploring philosophical classics (Plato's Symposium, maybe? Sartre? Hume?) actually appeal to you? If reading great literature with a friendly, laid-back, edgy intellectual crowd turns you on, then this is the meetup for you. We won't t …

We intend to engage the population of D.C. in discussions that clarify the axioms underlying the policies shaping our world. We do not adhere to any one political, economic, philosophical, or religious ideology; rather, we value critical Socratic style discourse and have aspirations to influence the culture of D.C. and the world accordingly. You should join this group if you have a passion for ideas that spans many disciplines and wish to enkindle the Socratic daemon in today's world.
… I'm pro legalizing marijuana, reject the "war on terror"-Everywhere, Forever War-concept, am pro-gay marriage, against the death penalty b/c I think the state is too incompetent to administer it justly, and have a generally classical liberal political philosophy (i.e. Adam Smith) since I generally value individual liberty/rights over equality (of outcomes.) So, how do you like them apples?! Just kidding. I don't want to pick fights or get nasty, I just want to have some great conversations about …
