Philosophy: "The ungainly attempt to tackle questions that come naturally to children, using methods that come naturally to lawyers." - Philosopher David Hill
Our purpose is to provide an open, free and stimulating environment where those who are starved for intelligent conversation can explore the most fascinating subjects reality has to offer. We have a topic for each event, along with a reading (usually in the form of a convenient link to an essay or an article online) which provides for a summary of the relevant concepts and a starting point for the discussion. Topics are wide-ranging, including the qualities of consciousness, informal logic, the philosophy of religion, the is/ought dichotomy, metaphysics, the different assumptions about moral values, 'true' and 'false' as meaningful categories, the belief-desire theory of action, business ethics and much more.
This is a group for people who think that philosophy is both interesting and useful, who wish to share their understanding about (or intellectual frustrations with) a particular subject, who wish to deepen their awareness of the big issues in life, and who want to improve their critical thinking skills. If that sounds like you, then welcome! Please come join us for a conversation. And do use the message board to let us know your suggestion for a future topic of discussion or to comment on a philosophical thread that interests you.
Is your being intertwined with nothingness. Does nothing naught? (Ok, I think that last one was Heiddeger). Come on down to Mangia Italiano for food, drink, and nausea.
As we learned at the November meetup, 155 pages including the Introduction is this side of ripping your cochlea out with rusty forceps (or so it seems to me). Read more
