For years, people have debated the effects of nature and nurture on the development of human personality. To what extent is ?who you are? determined by factors somehow present at birth? To what extent by what happens to you after birth? To what extent are you ?constrained? by your circumstances? To what extent can you, by some ?act of will?, change ?who you are??
Recent scientific evidence paints a complex picture ? with far more interaction between the effects of nature and nurture than was once assumed and the sometimes transient effects of brain chemistry also playing a role. With no clear cut, simple answer, to what extent can we hold parents, educators, etc. accountable for the ?character? of our youth? To what extent can we hold our contemporaries fully accountable for their actions?
