Are most people truly concerned with the "objective" truth of their religious convictions, or is it enough for them to be part of a religious community that, at least in large part, shares their views?

In my opinion, most people are more interested in a sense of "community" than they are in the"objective" truth of their religious convictions. Few people "study" alternative points of view for evidence of some "greater" truth. Their typical "struggle" is whether to remain in the faith in which they were raised or "drop out". To the extent that some continue their search beyond their abandonment of the faith in which they were raised, the search typically ends when they find some other "community" in which they're comfortable. They may, at that point, "secretly" maintain a point of view that differs, to some extent, from the presumed doctrine of the "community" as a whole, but they're seldom "troubled" by any obvious discrepancies. As but one example, many "practicing" Catholics privately hold views on abortion and birth control that differ from established church doctrine. They presumably consider it more important to be part of the Catholic "community" than to stand, publicly, for religious "truth".

That is an excellent observation. You have my agreement. Lets throw a few wellplaced stones at people who won't get out of a comfrotable bed and move this collective consciousness to its next phase. And before anyone berates me for throwing those stones, how is anyone ever going to see a new truth if it is not presented to them (the stones LOL).

In question posed, the people truly are looking for acceptance and not spiritual truth.
