The Long Beach Philosophy Meetup meets once a month to discuss topics in philosophy. Generally, the focus will be Western philosophy, but all points of view are welcome. Feel free to initiate a topic with the group by e-mail or show up at the meeting with a topic in mind. When possible, we will select topics for discussion at the preceding meeting. The suggestion of short reading available on the Internet is encouraged for all topics. For our 26th meeting, we will be discussing a topic suggested by Will--the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. I will try to post some topical readings in the near future. In the interim, feel free to check out the UC Berkeley Philosophy lectures by Hubert Dreyfus in iTunes University. Prof Dreyfus gave a class on Heidegger that's well worth checking out and can be found on iTunes U. If you are really motivated, go grab a copy of Being and Time or the Basic Writings of Heidegger and wow us with your deep knowledge of the subject. Remember to check the board close to the meeting day as we may be changing locations. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in. Meetings will end when they are over. Don't worry about being late--come when you can. And please remember to RSVP.

Obviously, we will be attempting to deal with the subject philosophically. So bring your best critical thinking skills to our examination of mysticism. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in. Meetings will end when they are over. During our discussion on the philosophy of sex, the nature and theory of truth came up several times. So our next meetup will focus on truth, what is it, how do we know it, and why is it important. I think this is a bone we've chewed on in the past, but it's one that keeps giving nourishment. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in. Meetings will end when they are over. At our last meeting, which ended on a somewhat discordant note centered perhaps on sexual differences, Marti suggested that sex/gender and reproductioin be the topic of our next meeting. Though she was to send me a suggested reading, she has doubtless been too busy. So, I am suggesting that we read the introduction to Simone de Beauvoir's feminist classic, The Second Sex. It can be found on-line at: http://www.marxists. org/reference/subjec t/ethics/de-beauvoir /2nd-sex/introductio n.htm The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in. Suggested readings to follow. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in. Meetings will end when they are over. For our 21st meeting, as extension of the previous topic on identity which was suggested by Uriah, we will be discussing "Where Dwells the Mind? or Where is the Mind Located?." This is a topic within the mind-body dualism debate. Those who find this issue intriguing should definitely be prepared for a lively debate. Suggested readings to follow. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in. Meetings will end when they are over. This is a component of a topic we have taken up many times in the past--personal identity--and I hope we find this aspect of the issue as fascinating as we have the other aspects of this topic. Suggested readings to follow. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in. Meetings will end when they are over. We are calling it Godel's Theorem II. The topic is an outgrowth of Uriah's fascinating and profound theory of consciousness. Uriah will attempt to secure a guest speaker. And what do either tell us about consciousness? Suggested readings to follow. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in.
