The Long Beach Philosophy Meetup meets once a month to discuss topics in philosophy. Generally, the focus will be Western philosophy, but all points of view are welcome.

Feel free to initiate a topic with the group by e-mail or show up at the meeting with a topic in mind. When possible, we will select topics for discussion at the preceding meeting. The suggestion of short reading available on the Internet is encouraged for all topics.

For our sixth meeting, the Gil suggested and the group selected the topic of knowing thyself. Andrew suggested that we read the book I Am A Strange Loop by Douglas Hofstadter. I second Andrew's suggestion and will come prepared to discuss existence as a strange loop. Gil, however, urges us to come prepared to discuss our selves in the first person personal, in our own voices, which I suggest we do as well, while keeping it philosophical rather than psychological. I look forward to seeing you all there.

The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in. Meetings will end when they are over. Don't worry about being late--come when you can.

Who attended?

    •  An outstanding and lively discussion.
    •  Discussion was stimulating. But continuing members had not read the book which they proposed as the topic for the meeting (??). Three new members attended. Hopefully we will see them again, as they made positive contributions to the discussion.
    •  More thought grease for your think tank!
    •  An excellent group of well informed philosphers discussing the most important philosphical questions in a friendly as well as stimulating environemt.
