Socrates Cafe of Teaneck, NJ
|
Socrates Cafe is a movement to bring philosophy outside the academic setting. It started in Montclair, NJ about 12 years ago to help those of us who are not professional philosophers develop our critical thinking skills by interacting respectfully and actively with others who share a love of ideas. There are hundreds of Socrates Cafes across the US, in the Americas, Europe and Asia. We meet on the first and third Monday of each month from mid-September to early June. The summer schedule will be announced.

What's New?

"Welcome to Socrates Cafe. Hope to see you on the first Monday in June. Richard"
-
"I can't believe that there's a Socrates' Cafe so close. I'm at Ramapo, doing a double major in Lit and Phil. I regularly attend philosophy conferences (just did Dartmouth and Providence) and love to philosophize with anyone. This is my group!"
-
"This sounds like a great group for me. As a teacher of literature, I'm constantly trying to foster a love of learning and questioning in my classroom. Joining a group like this will allow me to continue to develop my own thought process."
-
"I can't believe I finally found a group of "questioners" like myself! "
-
"I read a lot and I think a lot. Sounds like a good place to express thse ideas..."
-
"I wouldn't mind hearing friendly discussions on philosophy. I might even have something to add!"
-
"Hello. I'm a musician and I have an interest in philosophy. I'm anxious to learn just what happens at these meetings. "
-
"Hi Richard. Hi everybody. I enjoyed philosophy in school. It was my minor, but I remember so little. I'd love to join the discussion."
-
"I'm a mid western transplant working as an institutional financial software developer in the city. My work relies heavily on mathematics and very large scale logical systems, but is nevertheless completely intellectually un fulfilling."
-
"This sounds like a thought provoking group. Is there a reading list or any other recs?"
-
"My husband and I are looking forward to checking out this discussion group. We can't make the 1/21 meetup but will look for future dates..."
