Greetings!

My name is Gene. For the time being, I am the Philadelphia Philosophy Meetup group Organizer. We can discuss the possibilities of changes in meetup time, date, and location at the July 27 meetup. The meetup will be from 7pm to 8:20 (Starbucks closes at 8:30).

Due to the large number of last-minute cancelations (and you know who you are ;-) for the June 22 meetup, we will be repeating the following topic in July:

This month's opening topic: It's War! The power, the reason, the moral underpinnings of the President's ability to send people to their likely deaths.

All levels of philosophical knowledge are invited.

My apologies for being missing in action. I got very ill by meeting time. Speaking of which, I could really use an Assistant Organizer for such occasions. Any volunteers?

Harry Patch, the last of Britain's Army Veterans of WWI died yesterday, Saturday, July 25th. In an interview with Britain's ITN t.v. news channel shortly before he died, Mr. Patch was asked if the effort invested by the Allies in WWI was worth the lives that we lost, and he said, "No, it wasn't worth one.

    •  It's intriguing, and reaffirming, to find that so many people can accept the idea that life may be meaningless, or the meaning may be unknowable, and yet can bring joy to a discussion of meaning and purpose. Any broad discussion of philosophy always comes back to the meaning of life. We might do better to stick to a narrower topic and examine it more thoroughly. (Sorry, Gene, we strayed a LONG way from your topic). A topic I'd like to hear about is the ethics of memory: in what circumstances, if any, is it ethical or unethical to forget? So although we wandered far and wide I enjoyed the session and hope to see members again. Now I have to run off and see if I can add some beauty to the world -- however small -- since that’s my definition of the purpose of life! And enjoy the beauty that others have added, since that's the path to happiness.
