Alas, the Yarn Store is no more. Though it afforded many a night of philosophical inquiry, it fell victim to the economic hard times. Hence, this group is combined with the Long Beach Meetup, which takes place the second Friday of every month at the Coffee Bean located at Atlantic and Carson. If there is sufficient demand, a second meetup can be scheduled further north in the City of Angels. The Los Angeles Philosophy Meetup meets once a month to discuss topics in philosophy. Generally, the focus will be Western philosophy, but all points of view are welcome. December's topic is the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. Feel free to initiate a topic with the group by e-mail or show up at the meeting with a topic in mind. When possible, we will select topics for discussion at the preceding meeting. The suggestion of a short reading available on the Internet is encouraged for all topics. At our next meeting we will be discussing a topic suggested by Will--the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. I will try to post some topical readings in the near future. In the interim, feel free to check out the UC Berkeley Philosophy lectures by Hubert Dreyfus in iTunes University. Prof Dreyfus gave a class on Heidegger that's well worth checking out and can be found on iTunes U. If you are really motivated, go grab a copy of Being and Time or the Basic Writings of Heidegger and wow us with your deep knowledge of the subject. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in. Meetings will end when they are over. Don't worry about being late--come when you can. The Coffee Bean offers a variety of bevarages and snacks. We can discuss classic philosophical models, religion, politics, ethics, jokes, and life or death issues. I'd only ask that those with an agenda, those who need an audience, please bore elsewhere. Please remember to RSVP. David's successor, Chris.

For our 23nd meeting, we will be exploring a topic suggested by Marti. At our last meeting, which ended on a somewhat discordant note centered perhaps on sexual differences, Marti suggested that sex/gender and reproduction be the topic of our next meeting. Though she was to send me a suggested reading, she has doubtless been too busy. So, I am suggesting that we read the introduction to Simone de Beauvoir's feminist classic, The Second Sex. It can be found on-line at: http://www.marxists. org/reference/subjec t/ethics/de-beauvoir /2nd-sex/introductio n.htm The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. The first twenty minutes or so will be devoted to introductions and settling in. This may be the last meetup at this location. Life has forced us to change this next meeting to Tuesday January 13. We can begin our meeting about 7pm. If you can't be here at that time, no worries, come when you can. Since we have gone on a bit, I invite you to bring something to munch upon, maybe a bit to share. There are markets, a Trader Joes, and other eateries nearby. We can discuss classic philosophical models, religion, politics, ethics, jokes, and life or death issues. I'd only ask that those with an agenda, those who need an audience, please bore elsewhere. We meet at That Yarn Store (in Eagle Rock) See thatyarnstore.com or email me for directions or if you have any questions. David
