According to a report from the 2003 National Household Education Surveys Program, about 2.2 percent or 1 million of America's children were schooled at home. This represented a 29 percent increase from the estimate in 1999. Of the reasons given for homeschooling by a sample of the parents, 85% cited concerns over school safety, 68% felt they could do a better job, and 72% wanted to provide religious and moral instruction.

At the next Socrates Cafe, we will discuss the question, "How Should Children Be Educated?" How much control should parents have over what their children learn? Should there be national standards? What skills and knowledge should children learn and what's the best way to teach them? To prepare for the meeting, read the Wikipedia entry on the Philosophy of Education at http://en.wikipedia.o...

We will meet Wednesday evening, May 28th, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Tempe Library Cafe, 3500 S. Rural Road (at Southern Avenue) in Tempe. The Tempe Library Cafe is part of Tempe Connections, which is devoted to connecting baby boomers to life-long learning and civic activism. Learn more at http://www.tempeconne...

After each meeting, many of us go to Sneakers Sports & Grill (1470 E Southern Ave, Tempe, AZ) to socialize and philosophize. Please join us if you can't make the meeting but enjoy hanging out with thinkers.

A "how" question begs for some kind of plan, making this less of a "value" than a "policy" discussion. Yet a policy is still the practical deduction of an implemented value. I would propose a value of leading new human beings toward becoming complete and happy human beings. Thus, the primary determinants of the method of teaching must presuppose a vision of "completeness" and "happiness" as applied to humans.

Opponents of school vouchers and parental choice point out that studies showing that private schools outperform public schools do not take into account "socioeconomic differences" between the average pupil, which if taken into account, would mean that pubic schools do "about the same" as private schools ... That said, why are we spending $8,922 per pupil in tax dollars to empower government to do "about the same" when the average annual tuition for a private school is only $4,689?

    •  was a good meeting, although i don't think we solutioned an answer to the problem. oh well maybe the next generation will have better luck.
    •  One participant was particularly funny. :) Much too long was spent on definitions, so the meat of the discussion was never on the table.
    •  I liked Trish's idea the best: create a new alphabet!
    •  As usual, I thought the question was too broad. We hardly had time to define terms before the meeting was over. Try to narrow the subject matter so we don't spend so much time on term definitions but more on potential solutions to the questions.
    •  My only thought is that I want no part of it.
